It’s that time of the year again; recap time and a list of my favorite bites and food highlights from the past year. 2014 was a great year of eating, shared with amazing family and fabulous friends. Not so great for my waistline, but some serious deliciousness all around. My summer trip to Italy was definitely a highlight, while the Vancouver food scene’s constant evolution is producing some stunning and delicious food. December is not even half over, but here is my gastronomic year in review. Click on the mosaic further down for descriptions and a larger image. Merry Christmas y’all and have an amazing new year.
Every year, I crave at least one massive live Alaskan king crab feast. This year’s feast was extra special because my “Parental Units” flew in from Toronto for this meal.
After a week of Vegas fare, this steamed Chilean sea bass knocked it out of the park
Sfogliatelle straight from the oven (Naples)
Japanese A5 Wagyu at Octopus’ Garden was such an unexpected and luxe treat
At our reunion dinner pop-up, I tasked one of the boys to make my old chicken liver parfait. The parfait was like hanging out with an old friend I hadn’t seen in a while.
I hadn’t had a nice rack of lamb in forever; this dinner at home hit the spot perfectly
The “salad” at Au Comptoir with duck prosciutto, confit gizzards and foie gras was quack-alicious
Coppa di testa with ginger at Roscioli (Rome)
Dim sum at Chef Tony’s is unique, delicate and delicious
The arrosticini (grilled mutton skewers) were epic at Margherita Due (Pianella)
A perfect January day; oysters, wine and good friends at Taylor Shellfish Farm in Bellingham
Spaghetti Carbonara. The real deal from Roscioli (Rome)
Foie gras, wagyu and uni sushi pockets by Sada
The Montreal smoked meat experience I had at Estrella’s was the best MSM sandwich I’ve ever had
Veal tongue and burrata at Bufala Pizzeria
A sampling of Chef Pino Posteraro’s housemade charcuterie was highlighted by his 3 year old “pata negra” style ham. I’ve eaten a lot of jamon, prosciutto and ham in my day, this ham was ridiculous.
The best chips, not fries, in Vancouver are at The Fat Badger
Made that day burrata (the best I’ve ever had) from Puglia
Ethereal pizza fritta with ricotta at Pepe in Grani (Caiazzo)
White truffle wine dinner at Notturno was a delicious and luxurious experience
The American Classic Burger with a slab of foie gras at Hubert Keller’s Burger Bar (Las Vegas)
Not a big fan of tortillas or sturgeon, but this sturgeon taco at Rob Clark’s The Fish Counter was incredible
I cured some sockeye roe with sake, soy and maple. Unbelievable.
The best late night snack at home; stracciatella, shaved truffle, good olive oil
Made some chitarroni with the kids and it was an exceptional plate of pasta
Life changing Margherita pizza at Pepe in Grani (Caiazzo)
Dirty Burger (DP) + foie gras + fried chicken skin + fried egg = Gang Bang Upstairs at Campagnolo
I eat a fair amount of sushi, but the madai that night at Zest Japanese Cuisine, was exceptional
Roman tripe, the epitome of Roman comfort food
Rustichella d’Abruzzo Primograno spaghettoni + mullet bottarga = the perfect lunch
